Hey everyone! We’re back with another blog of Behind the Reality to talk about the world of reality television.
Production of reality TV is a bit different from fictional shows where reality TV is not 100% scripted and doesn’t have specific characters, sets, and plot lines. Reality TV shows are known for entertaining audiences by the unscripted drama, emotions, and compelling personalities.
Today, this blog will be talking about the casting process and contestant recruitment as well as why people choose to go on reality TV.

The Casting Process
The casting process is unique because there are multiple different ways someone can audition to be on reality TV. First, there are open casting calls. Many reality TV shows often search for people by hosting open casting calls in major cities. These events are a chance for aspiring contestants to showcase their personalities and talents. Second, there are casting agencies. Casting agencies play a crucial role in connecting potential contestants with shows, and they often scout for individuals who fit specific criteria set by producers. Third, there are online applications. With the digital age in full swing, online applications have become a popular way to seek out potential contestants. Aspiring reality stars can submit videos and applications to be considered.
The role of casting directors and producers is to find people to star on shows. They know the audience, format and purpose of the show the best. They are the ones that find the cast. Their main task is to find people by being the middleman for communication during recruitment, filming, and post-production. Organization is also their responsibility. They manage the casting team and often a large number of applicants at various stages of a production. In addition, they also have the responsibility for the wellbeing of the cast and maintain regular contact to ensure they are happy with their involvement.
Beforehand, casting directors and producers usually do a bit of research about the people they want on the program. They look into the background of potential candidates from where they are from, how old, family and relationship history, and much more. However, when they are looking for potential candidates, there is a common criteria for selection which includes diversity, unique personalities, and story potential.
Diversity is important because shows usually want a mix of personalities, backgrounds, and demographics to appeal to a broad audience. Unique personalities also are looked for. Casting directors and producers want unpredictable, charismatic, and captivating individuals. Story potential is also crucial where producers specifically want contestants who have compelling life stories, struggles, or unique talents often make for more interesting narratives.
Reality TV show teams are always trying to find compelling individuals who can create engaging content.
Motivations for Joining Reality TV
When we think about why people would want to go on reality TV, it may not originally come to mind that there are multiple motivations.
The first that might come to mind is the desire for fame and recognition. Some people might want to be on reality TV for the result of gaining popularity. With that new popularity, career opportunities might arise. Contestants often see reality TV as a stepping stone to opportunities in the entertainment industry.
Sometimes reality TV stars go on to the acting, modeling, or entrepreneurship world. In addition, social media exposure can extend from the desire for fame motivation. Some reality TV stars grow their following on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, making it a marketing opportunity as aspiring influencers.

We can’t forget about prize money and incentives. There are many reality TV shows that push a reward at the end. Winning a reward is a strong motivator for those willing to endure the challenges of reality TV competitions. Some shows that have prize money and incentives are Survivor and The Voice.

Despite some saying reality TV is not actually genuine, some may go on for personal growth and self-discovery from the new experience. Many contestants see reality TV as a path to personal growth and self-discovery, a journey that could transform their lives. It can teach them how to persevere through a new challenging environment, be vulnerable, and interact with new people. Dating and relationship-oriented reality shows also attract contestants looking for love or hoping to repair their romantic lives.
Without the casting process and the many motivations of those who decide to join these shows, reality TV wouldn’t be a thing. Whether the cast seeks fame, personal growth, or love, they can bring unique perspectives and stories to our screens, enriching the landscape of modern entertainment.
